GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - A Gaston County apartment manager has seen sentenced to probation for sealing more than $40,000 from an 81-year-old tenant with dementia.

The Gaston Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1g7xo3l ) that 51-year-old Meredith Gaddis submitted an Alford plea Thursday and was ordered to serve 18 months of probation and pay back $34,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors say Gaddis took advantage of the man, taking checks that were supposed to be for rent and other expenses and cashing them for herself.

Defense attorney Brent Ratchford says Gaddis cooked the man meals and acted as his caretaker. Ratchford says she was also struggling to put her son through college.

In Alford pleas, suspects admits there is enough evidence to find them guilty, but do not admit guilt.
