POTEAU, Okla. (AP) - A Cameron man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his former brother-in-law.
The Times Record reports (https://bit.ly/1svj0DX ) that the jury deliberated nearly four hours Friday before finding 61-year-old Raymond Larry Nichols guilty of killing 61-year-old Donald Joe Neff in 2009.
Prosecutors say Neff was shot in the back of the head outside the bar he owned near Poteau and his body left in a pond. Nichols was arrested in 2013 after the weapon that prosecutors say was used in the shooting was found in an area near where Neff’s body had been found.
Defense attorney Doug Schmuck argued that the evidence did not connect Nichols to the crime.
The jury recommended life in prison without parole for Nichols. Sentencing is set for July 10.
