WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say a Long Island woman has been arrested on an animal cruelty charge after two dozen cats were rescued from her filthy, condemned home.
The Nassau district attorney’s office says a tip lead town and local animal shelter officials to execute a search warrant Wednesday at the Westbury home of 59-year-old Valerie Varnuska.
Authorities say the rescued cats were living in filthy, dangerous conditions. The house was deemed unfit for habitation and later condemned by local officials.
Varnuska was released on probation after her arraignment and is due back in court on July 15. It wasn’t clear if she had a lawyer.
The rescued cats are in the custody of the North Shore Animal League.
