PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say an 11-year-old boy drowned while trying to remove the cover from an aboveground swimming pool in his backyard.

Police were called to the boy’s home Wednesday. The boy, identified as Ivan Nunez, was taken to a local hospital via helicopter but was later pronounced dead.

Police Sgt. Steve Martos says investigators have learned that the boy and his younger brother were planning to swim. The boy entered the pool and tried to remove its plastic cover.

Investigators are unsure of whether the boy got tangled up with the cover.

The younger brother tried to help but couldn’t. The victim’s 15-year-old brother was called from inside the home and he was able to pull the boy from the pool.

The boy was unresponsive when police and paramedics arrived.
