SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A former eastern Georgia police officer has been sentenced to more than a year in prison for his role in hiding a multi-state pill mill operation.
Former Pooler police officer John William Stanley was sentenced Monday to 17 months in federal prison on charges of conspiring to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and distribution of a controlled substance.
Authorities say a couple that 36-year-old Stanley knew was running a pill mill from their home between 2004 and 2011. Prosecutors have said Stanley warned the couple of a possible investigation after a person they hired to distribute the drugs in Georgia and Florida was arrested by Pooler police.
Stanley is expected to report to prison in late June.
