Duncan, Okla. (AP) - A small herd of wild donkeys went off to news homes recently, as did an old fire truck that’s going to be turned into barbecue smoker.

At Duncan’s first auction of surplus property in at least a decade, the 15 donkeys drew a lot of interest and sold for up to $37.50 each.

They were rounded up in April near Lake Humphrey, where they had been living in the wild for at least a few years. After homeowners complained, the city called a rancher who captured the herd with three wranglers and brought them to the auction in a livestock trailer.

Steve Gilley, the owner of Gilley’s Welding shop in Duncan, bought two of them.

“I’ve got two grandkids who need something to do,” he told The Duncan Banner (https://bit.ly/1fXpvx3). “They’ll be out of school soon. We’ll have fun with ‘em.”

Jack Van Dyke, 85, bought three of the donkeys.

He wants the donkeys to keep the coyotes away from the two beef cows he plans to put on his 40 acres.

“When they run with cows they keep the coyotes away. I like donkeys anyway. Look at those big ears sticking up through there,” he said, pointing at the trailer full of donkeys.

The fire truck, which Duncan leased to Marlow for a time, won’t be going far.

Its new owner, Ralph McDaniel, said he’s going to turn the ladder truck into a barbecue smoker and park it in front of his motorcycle shop, Journey Custom Cycles, on U.S. Highway 81.

The ladder on the truck will be useful for displaying flags and banners, he said.

After he turns the fire truck into a mobile barbecue smoker, he plans to hold weekend cookouts to raise money for a new ministry he has founded to help homeless men. He also might take it to motorcycle rallies.

McDaniel won the truck with a $3,500 bid.
