IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa City man has been accused of reaching for a University of Iowa police officer’s gun during an altercation.

Police say 50-year-old Steven B. Willard was arrested Thursday morning as he attempted to hitchhike on a highway. He approached a responding officer and pushed him. He also allegedly reached for the officer’s gun.

Willard had been committed earlier to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics but had left the facility. Officials say he was committed because he was a danger to himself and others.

Police say the arresting officer sustained multiple cuts to his hands during the altercation.

Willard faces multiple charges, including disarming a peace officer. He remains at the Johnson County Jail. Court records do not list an attorney.
