SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (AP) - An 18-year-old San Francisco Bay Area girl is dead after a witness says she was struck by a train as she walked crossed railroad tracks while talking on her cellphone.

Witness Ho Hanh tells KTVU-TV (https://bit.ly/1jzkSKw) he was walking on a sidewalk in San Leandro near the girl on Monday when he spotted the train coming and the crossing arms going down. He said he tried to warn her, but she did not react to his screams.

Police say other witnesses told investigators the girl was wearing headphones.

She was struck around 6 p.m. by an Amtrak train.

The girl was identified by family members as Brittney Silva. Her mother, Cynthia, said Brittney was getting ready to graduate from high school and had been accepted to two universities.
