ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A minister and the son of a former Georgia congressman will compete in a runoff election to choose a Republican nominee for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Paul Broun of Athens.

Unofficial primary returns Tuesday showed a close race between pastor and radio host Jody Hice of Monroe and trucking company owner Mike Collins of Jackson, whose father is former Rep. Mac Collins. With seven candidates in the GOP primary for east Georgia’s 10th District seat, both Hice and Collins were far short of winning a majority of the vote.

Voters will pick a Republican nominee in a July 22 runoff. The district covers a section of eastern Georgia including Athens, Milledgeville and part of Columbia County outside Augusta.

Broun stepped aside to seek Georgia’s open Senate seat.
