Fifteen states and Washington, D.C., allow for dispensaries where medical marijuana can be grown in large quantities and sold to qualified patients. A look at how they currently treat the drug for tax purposes:

Arizona

California

Colorado



Connecticut

Illinois (1 percent sales tax like prescription drugs)

Maine

Nevada

New Jersey

New Mexico

Rhode Island

Washington, D.C.

NOT TAXED:

Delaware (no state sales tax)

Massachusetts

New Hampshire (no state sales tax)

Oregon (no state sales tax)

Vermont
