LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) - Authorities say a George County deputy answering a domestic call shot and killed a man who threatened him with a rifle.

Sheriff’s department spokeswoman Shonna Pierce said in a statement that the shooting occurred Monday night in the Basin community.

Pierce says the deputy got to the home and tried to make contact with those inside when a man walked out armed with rifle.

Pierce says the deputy told the man to drop the gun and when the man raised the weapon to fire at the deputy, the deputy fired.

The names of the deceased and the deputy involved have not been released.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation.
