PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A first-grader has died after collapsing in his Philadelphia elementary school classroom.

School district officials say it happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Andrew Jackson School in south Philadelphia.

They say school staff trained in first aid and CPR tried to revive the 7-year-old boy but he was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a hospital.

It was not clear whether the child had a pre-existing medical condition. School officials cannot discuss students’ medical histories.

School District spokesman Fernando Gallard said was no nurse at the school when the boy fell ill. The school of 450 students has a nurse every Thursday and every other Friday.

The boy’s name hasn’t been released.
