NEW YORK (AP) - An inmate is seeking to sue New York City for not preventing a convicted sex offender from posing as an investigator to get into a jail and grope him.

The inmate filed court papers Thursday. He’s seeking permission to sue in Manhattan state court after withdrawing a similar claim in federal court.

The city Law Department declined to comment.

Matthew Matagrano had already been convicted of sex crimes when prosecutors said he impersonated his way into the Manhattan Detention Center and molested an inmate in February 2013.

Matagrano is serving at least 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually motivated burglary in the Manhattan jail incident, plus burglary for sneaking into the Rikers Island jail.

Some other inmates have also filed claims against the city over Matagrano.
