TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson soldier who reportedly had a role in helping to rescue former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch in Iraq will be laid to rest this weekend.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/SpkrqA) that a funeral service for Command Sgt. Maj. Martin Barreras will be held Saturday morning in Tucson.

U.S. Department of Defense officials say Barreras died May 13 in San Antonio Military Medical Center of wounds suffered in Afghanistan.

They say the 49-year-old was injured earlier this month when his unit was attacked in Herat Province.

The service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Christ Community Church.

Barreras‘ son says his father was instrumental in Lynch’s rescue but didn’t talk about it much.

Military officials have not commented on the matter.
