CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia will celebrate its heritage this weekend during the Vandalia Gathering at the state Capitol Complex.

The festival kicks off with a quilting competition awards ceremony and a concert Friday night in Charleston. The festival also includes traditional music, arts and crafts and food vendors.

Music contests on Saturday and Sunday will feature old-time fiddle, bluegrass banjo, lap dulcimer and mandolin.

Bakers will compete for the best pound cake and best cupcake awards on Saturday.

The Liars Contest will be held at the Culture Center on Sunday.

The contests are only open to West Virginia residents.

Some events at last year’s Vandalia Gathering were moved to June as part of West Virginia’s 150th birthday celebration.
