PHOENIX (AP) - A highway improvement project that was to close part of State Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon beginning next Tuesday is on hold indefinitely because of the Slide Fire.

The Arizona Department of Transportation had planned to close the highway’s switchbacks portion at the north end of the canyon starting Tuesday, after the Memorial Day weekend.

The highway is now closed between Sedona and Flagstaff because of the fire, but it’s delaying the planned widening and other work on a three-mile stretch in the switchbacks area.

Once the fire is contained, ADOT says it’ll need to assess the highway’s condition and the potential for rock falls before resuming work on the highway project.

There is no estimate on when the highway to reopen.
