TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A former sheriff in northwestern Ohio has been fined $1,000 misspending government funds.

Former Ottawa County sheriff Robert Bratton pleaded guilty earlier this year to improperly spending more than $5,000 from federal funds earmarked for law enforcement needs.

He could have been sentenced to several months in jail.

U.S. District Court Judge Jack Zouhary instead sentenced Bratton on Thursday to a fine and one year’s probation.

Bratton was sheriff in Ottawa County from 2004 to 2011. He says repaid the money and apologized in court.

Prosecutors say he spent some of the money on personal items including clothing, prescription medicine and tickets for Cedar Point amusement park.
