BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Commercial harvesters of large sharks in Louisiana coastal waters will be banned from taking the animals until Jan. 1.

The state Department Wildlife and Fisheries says Louisiana normally closes the season for large sharks from April 1 through June 30 while the sharks spawn.

During the closed season, all commercial harvest, possession, purchase, exchange, barter, trade, sale or attempt to purchase, exchange, barter, trade or sell large coastal sharks or their fins is prohibited.

The season for the commercial harvest of small coastal sharks in Louisiana waters remains open.
