HILL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an 8-year-old Michigan girl is recovering from injuries after she and the dog she was carrying were attacked by a pit bull that broke loose from a chain.

WSGW-AM and WPBN-WTOM report the girl was carrying a small dog in Ogemaw County’s Hill Township, about 90 miles southeast of Traverse City. As she walked by a neighbor’s cabin, the pit bull attacked her and the smaller dog after she dropped it.

The Michigan State Police post in West Branch says the attack happened Saturday.

Authorities say the girl’s mother and pit bull’s owner separated the dogs. The girl was treated for several dog bites and the smaller dog was taken to a veterinarian for surgery.

The case is being reviewed by county prosecutors and animal control officers.
