POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating after a southeast Missouri man was shot and killed by a Butler County sheriff’s deputy.

The shooting happened at 12:50 a.m. Saturday on a rural route near Poplar Bluff. Authorities have not released the victim’s name nor the deputy’s name.

The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic (https://bit.ly/14xhyUm ) reports that the deputy responded to a home to investigate a possible trespasser or prowler, when someone began shooting at him.



Sheriff Mark Dobbs says the officer returned fire, killing the suspect.
