LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say two employees have been fired after an inmate suicide at the Lancaster County jail.

Sheriff Barry Faile said Tuesday 44-year-old Randy Stevens used a bed sheet to hang himself on May 20.

Stevens had been arrested a day earlier and charged with public disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Authorities say Stevens denied having suicidal thoughts and was sent to jail after being checked out at a hospital.

Shortly after calming down at the jail, Faile says Stevens used a sheet to hang himself. A guard making early morning routine rounds found him dead.

Faile says Stevens‘ suicide couldn’t have been prevented. But the sheriff did say two employees had been fired and others disciplined because of violations of jail policy on how frequently officers should check on inmates.
