GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - The Grants Pass City Council is considering an increase in utility taxes to stop the revolving door at the local jail for the town’s criminal suspects.

The Daily Courier (https://bit.ly/1koiGF7) reports the council directed the city manager to draw up a proposal it can consider June 18.

City Manager Aaron Cubic estimates $3.42 a month per utility bill would pay for 30 beds at the county jail.

Last year voters in Josephine County turned down a law enforcement levy to replace federal timber subsidies. The council scraped together $1 million to pay for jail beds exclusively for people arrested in the city.

Last week another jail levy failed. Council members say they don’t want to go back to seeing so many suspects handed citations instead of going to jail.
