CAMDEN, Maine (AP) - The father of Olympic snowboarder Seth Wescott has died in a boating accident in Maine.

The Maine Warden Service Tuesday night recovered the body of James B. Wescott, a retired Colby College track and field coach, from Megunticook Lake in Camden.

Wardens say the 71-year-old was in a single person sculling boat around 8 a.m. Tuesday when he fell into the water and failed to resurface. He’d apparently suffered a medical emergency. Divers found his body about 12 hours later.

Wescott helped 11 athletes earn All-American status.

Lori Kletzer, Colby College’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, says the former coach “challenged and inspired” hundreds of student athletes. He retired in 2003.

His son, Seth Wescott, is a two-time Olympic champion in the snowboard cross event.
