TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - Police have arrested a man who they say tried to run down an officer with his car in southern New Jersey.

Toms River police took 24-year-old Shamar Kerr into custody Wednesday night after a 4 ½ hour manhunt.

Authorities say it all began when officers approached a car suspected of being involved in drug activity. The driver allegedly stepped on the gas and tried to run down an officer. Police say the officer then fired his weapon and the driver fled on foot.

Police identified the driver as Kerr. The Jackson Township man was later arrested without incident.

He’s charged with attempted murder, eluding police and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with the intent to distribute. Bail has been set at $500,000.

The investigation is ongoing.
