MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois judge abruptly ended an alderman’s sexual abuse and kidnapping trial after his outburst during jury selection.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports (https://bit.ly/1knksX2 ) Jackson County Circuit Judge William Schwartz declared a mistrial Tuesday in 46-year-old Ronald Nolan’s case and ruled that the Murphysboro alderman is unfit for trial.

Nolan was remanded to the Department of Human Services’ custody for an evaluation and treatment.

Nolan was set to stand trial on aggravated criminal sexual abuse, kidnapping and unlawful restraint counts after authorities say he drove around Jackson and Union counties in September with a 20-year-old Carbondale woman against her will.

He also has pleaded not guilty to charges that he attacked guards in October during a failed jail escape.

Nolan has refused to resign his aldermanic seat.
