PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence College is providing a $750,000 grant to the Smith Hill Community Development Corp. to help improve the housing stock near the campus.

The organization will spend $250,000 a year for three years to make improvements along Douglas Avenue and Admiral Street, which are both gateway road to the school.

Providence College and the Smith Hill CDC have partnered on several projects in recent years. The PC/Smith Hill Annex is a community space that hosts programs and discussions groups and classes. The school and the CDC also recently started a small business, the Common Grounds Cafe, adjacent to the Annex.

PC President Rev. Brian Shanley says the grant is a way to support the organization’s work reclaiming boarded-up and dilapidated houses in Smith Hill.
