SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A Spartanburg County jail officer is recovering after she was attacked by an inmate at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The sheriff’s department said 32-year-old Caroline Foxwell-Holmes was taken to the hospital for treatment of a medical condition around midnight Sunday.

The sheriff’s office said the woman attacked Deputy Denise Gaines. Hospital security officers and Spartanburg police responded to the incident.

Investigators say as Gaines was putting a shackle back on Foxwell-Holmes, she attacked the officer and tried to get her gun. Gaines used pepper spray to incapacitate Foxwell-Holmes, allowing hospital security to take Foxwell-Holmes into custody.

Lt. Tony Ivey says Gaines is recovering at home.

Foxwell-Holmes was being held on second-degree assault and battery charges and using a vehicle without the owner’s permission. More charges are expected.
