HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Lois West, the 92-year-old widow of former South Carolina Gov. John C. West, has died.

Jack West says his mother died suddenly Tuesday morning at her home on Hilton Head Island.

West said his mother had suffered heart problems. He said a funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden.

Gov. West, a Democrat, served from 1971 to 1975. The Camden native also served as the lieutenant governor from 1966 to 1971. Following his term as governor, West served as the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1977 to 1981.

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, who worked for Gov. West, issued a statement mourning her passing, calling her a bright light in the governor’s life.
