FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A South Florida man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a drunken driving crash that left a Miami Heat dancer dead.

A Broward County judge sentenced 46-year-old Mario Careaga on Monday. He was convicted in March of DUI manslaughter.

Authorities say 22-year-old Nancy Lopez-Ruiz had stopped on her motorcycle in the median near a busy Fort Lauderdale intersection in September 2010 when Careaga hit her with his Mercedes. Careaga said that he was trying to avoid a dangerous driver behind him when he swerved and hit Lopez-Ruiz. Careaga had been drinking at a nearby mall but claimed he didn’t drink enough to be impaired.

Officials say Careaga’s blood-alcohol level after the crash was about three times the legal limit. Florida law considers a driver impaired at 0.08 percent.
