MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - The Nassau County police department says it has fired a Long Island police officer who was off-duty when he shot an unarmed taxi driver after a night drinking with another officer.

Anthony DiLeonardo’s termination was announced Monday.

Authorities say he fired his service weapon five times at the cab driver as the cabbie was backing away with his pregnant girlfriend in the passenger seat Feb. 27, 2011.

DiLeonardo was hired in November 2007. He was most recently on restricted duty at the Third Precinct in Williston Park.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1utTS27 ) says his attorney declined to confirm his client’s firing but said he would sue if he was terminated.

DiLeonard also did not comment.
