PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s turnpike and bridge authority has delayed any toll increase on the Sakonnet or Newport bridges to allow the General Assembly more time to work on a statewide transportation funding bill.

The RITBA board approved a delay from May 16 to June 12. The 10-cent Sakonnet toll was slated to go up to 50 cents for those with an in-state E-ZPass transponder and $3.75 for others. If lawmakers blocked the hike, the Newport Bridge toll was to increase instead.

Acting RITBA Chairman Stephen Waluk says the delay gives lawmakers more time to pass legislation designed to fund bridge and road projects while eliminating the need for a Sakonnet toll.

The Senate was to vote Wednesday but is pushing it back to work out differences with the House and governor.
