MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin says the owner of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant has made a $5.3 million payment to the state for the development of clean energy.

The governor’s office said Thursday that Entergy also deposited $10 million as its first payment in the Vermont Yankee Site Restoration Fund.

The two payments were part of a settlement agreement and memorandum of understanding between Entergy and the state signed in December 2013.

Shumlin says the $5.3 million will be administered by the Public Service Department’s Clean Energy Development Fund to help in the development of renewable energy sources around the state. As part of the deal, at least 50 percent of the funds for clean energy development must be spent on activities in or for the benefit of Windham County.
