OPINION:
I was astonished to pick up my Washington Times of Nov. 11 and read at the very top a large banner: “Happy Veterans Day.” I was astonished because the 11th day of the 11th month is when we as a nation pause to reflect not only on the end of World War I (especially poignant on the 100th anniversary of that war’s beginning), but on the courage, sacrifice and duty of all our armed forces, past and present.
Veterans Day is a day that should be marked by heartfelt appreciation to service members and veterans, and quiet reflection on what these people have sacrificed in service to our country. I would suggest it is a day in which the word “happy” is neither appropriate nor fitting. Happy Valentine’s Day, yes, but Happy Veterans Day? I rather think not. Words have meaning, especially in big banners across newspaper front pages. How about “Honor Our Veterans” next time?
