Never before have I seen such a demonstration of semantic hair-splitting being sold to the American people as a genuine haircut. For a leader trying to come across as commander in chief, President Obama has tiptoed his way into war by telling the American people and the world that the Islamic State jihadists aren’t Muslims in the true sense. Has the president gotten a recent intelligence report of a large number of atheists or Jehovah’s Witnesses salted among the ranks of this self-declared Islamic State?

After six years on the job, it has become very apparent that our Harvard-educated president is kind of slow on the uptake. He has yet to learn that the military mission isn’t to replicate society’s evolving notions of equity, but to simply wage sustained and controlled violence. Everyone in the profession of arms knows the price of mud has always been blood. No modern war has ever been won by taking surgical, aerial potshots at selected individuals or pickup trucks with $110,000 missiles. You win by slaughtering your enemies in wholesale numbers, and you do it at an operational tempo they cannot sustain. It is not supposed to be a “fair fight.”

Only a fool tries to reason with a barbarian who has already established the rules by which he intends to meet you in the engagement. So you make the contest so overwhelmingly horrid they sue for peace, and until they do, we hold open the gates to Paradise, and obligingly sweep them out of this world and into the next with a fiery broom as fast as we can.

Mr. Obama has to start living in the here and now — because if he doesn’t, all his continual organizing, fundraising and projecting for our future will be irrelevant to those guys waving their black Islamic State flags from the White House balcony.
