Rep. Vance McAllister, Louisiana Republican, released a campaign ad with his wife vouching for his character after he was caught on film kissing a married staffer earlier this year.

In the ad released Monday, the so-called “kissing congressman” appears alongside his wife and says he is “blessed” to have a great family and a Christian wife.

Kelly McAllister, his wife, said she too is all “blessed to have a husband who owns up to his mistakes, never gives up, always fighting for the good people of Louisiana.”

Mr. McAllister was caught on camera kissing a married staffer in April, but resisted calls from GOP leadership to resign. While he initially said he would not run for re-election, he changed his mind over the summer and is trying to stay in his House seat.

The theme of the ad is that people make mistakes, but it’s more important how they recover from them.

Commenters on the members’ re-election Facebook page seemed split on the ad. While many posted comments of support, like “Great ad” and “Liked the honesty,” others seemed unable to let go of the congressman’s past.

“You’re making your wife look equally stupid,” one wrote.

Once commenter wrote that Mr. McAllister had a pretty wife — and his vote.

“Thx for telling him this-he tends to forget,” someone replied.
