Marvel Comics has decided to make a famous “X-Men” character gay after decades of relationships with women as a straight man.

“All-New X-Men” No. 40 introduces Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, as a gay man.

The issue, released Wednesday, involves the character Jean Grey reading the mind of a younger version of Iceman. She tells him that despite his older self dating women, he is in fact “full gay,” tech news outlet The Verge reported Tuesday.

“There are thousands if not millions of stories of people who, for many different reasons, felt the need to hide their sexuality. The X-Men, with the conceit of time travel, give us a fascinating platform in which to examine such personal journeys. This is just the first little chapter of a much larger story that will be told,” writer Brian Michael Bendis told CNN.
