Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Gary Kroeger made his official bid Monday night to challenge freshman Republican Rep. Rod Blum for Iowa’s 1st District House seat.

“I am not a political insider with a message for the people,” the Democrat told supporters in Cedar Falls, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported. “I am from the people with a message for the insiders.”

Mr. Kroeger, who appeared on “SNL” from 1982 to 1985, is a Cedar Falls native currently working as an advertising executive, The Hill reported.

He promised to represent Iowa’s middle class and not be a “country club Democrat.”

“We need to change the conversation in Washington,” Mr. Kroeger, 57, told supporters.

The other Democratic candidates who have announced are Cedar Rapids City Councilwoman Monica Vernon and Cedar Rapids business owner Ravia Patel.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has targeted Mr. Blum as one of 15 House Republicans it believes risk defeat in 2016, The Hill reported.
