Twitter users after the Ohio State trouncing of Oregon weren’t talking so much about the score — which was 42-20 — as they were about the striking similarities between lead referee Greg Burks to comedian Bob Newhart.

The facial features of the two men were so in line, in fact, that Mr. Newhart himself weighed in on twitter.

“In regards to my new career as head ref for #OSUvsORE - Hey, I don’t have a series any more - I had to do something,” he tweeted.

His message was retweeted and favorited thousands of times.

Good Morning America eventually commented, below a side-by-side photo of the two men, with Mr. Burks in his black-and-white striped uniform and Mr. Newhart, in a green, yellow and white Papa Elf costume that he wore during the 2003 movie, “Elf.”

“Okay, yeah, the head ref does look like Bob Newhart. ‘He didn’t make Master Tinker until he was 490,’” GMA tweeted.
