ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Common estimates of the number of privately owned guns in the United States are between 300 million and 310 million. No one really knows the exact number, and these figures include both legally and illegally owned firearms.

This heavily armed civilian nation will be a deterrent to any attempt to invade and subdue it. Not only will a heavily trained and armed military be an immense source of resistance, but America’s heavily armed civilian population would impose a huge wall of violent opposition to any invading force.

These facts place a heavy burden on America’s deterrent capability in nuclear weapons and nuclear response since strategic nuclear weapons from the likes of Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan and terrorist intruders who have either infiltrated or are homegrown in America pose an growing nuclear risk to America.

For these reasons the Obama administration must curtail its self-disarmament of nuclear weapons, reversing significantly the recent reduction in U.S. strategic nuclear arms equipped and aimed at these multiple rivals. This means our government must immediately abrogate the nuclear arms agreements with Russia, including NEW START. If it does not the U.S. population is at ever-greater risk of being victimized by these traditional and emerging nuclear powers.
