CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) - Hundreds of singers are expected to attend a Sacred Harp singing this weekend at the Cullman County Courthouse.

The annual convention celebrates a special type of Southern spiritual singing that uses shaped notes. It’s performed a cappella with singers seated in a square.

Records show Sacred Harp singings have been held in the courthouse from the 1890s to the present.

The Cullman Times (https://bit.ly/1KUISoz ) reports the style has enjoyed resurgence, particularly after it was featured in the 2003 file “Cold Mountain,” which was set during the Civil War.
