THOMSON, Ga. (AP) - A Thomson teen has drowned while swimming in a chalk mine pond with friends.

Multiple media outlets report that the body of 19-year-old Marquavious Cummings was recovered Thursday night, a few hours after rescue crews were called to the Dearing pond.

Cummings played football for Thomson High School from 2010-2013 and was quarterback his senior year.

McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall says that he and others in his office have been afraid of a drowning occurring in the pond because several people have been arrested and charged with criminal trespass recently for crossing over barriers and entering area chalk pits to swim.

Marshall says deputies have posted signs and have been checking in on some of the chalk pit ponds for trespassers.
