President Obama called the U.S. women’s national soccer team members — apparently all at once — to congratulate them Monday on winning the Women’s World Cup.

The White House said Mr. Obama congratulated the team on “displaying the strength and spirit that makes our country great — in front of the largest soccer audience in American TV history.”

The U.S. defeated Japan 5-2 Sunday night to win its third World Cup in women’s competition.

Mr. Obama also praised Coach Jill Ellis “for her leadership during this remarkable run” and Carli Lloyd’s “extraordinary hat trick and early goal,” the White House said.

The president told the members of the team that he looks forward to hosting them for a White House celebration.
