A Jacksonville, Florida, man who was reported dead two years ago was arrested in North Carolina after police say he faked a terminal illness to duck millions of dollars of debt.

Jose Lantigua, 62, was reported dead in Venezuela in 2013, leaving his former furniture store deep in the red. But his life insurance company notified police after their investigation revealed claims were still being filed for his accounts.

The insurance company also claims a worker was bribed to falsify documents to show that Mr. Lantigua’s body was cremated.

Prosecutors issued a fresh arrest warrant last week for Mr. Lantigua, who now faces fraud charges.
