After eight days of deliberation, the judge declared a hung jury Thursday in the sentencing of Jodi Arias for the 2008 murder of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander. Prosecutors had originally sought the death penalty.

The judge will now decide if Arias gets a life sentence or the possibility of release in 25 years.

Arias was found guilty in 2013 of killing her ex-boyfriend Alexander after the jury failed to believe her testimony that she killed him in self-defense. It took the jury about 15 hours of deliberation to convict Arias of first-degree murder.

Alexander’s throat was slashed, and he was stabbed more than 27 times. He also suffered a gunshot to the head.
