KODIAK, Alaska (AP) - Three orphaned brown bear cubs have been sent from Kodiak to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage after their mother was shot.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror (https://bit.ly/1IoFPUq ) reports Mike Munsey from Munsey’s Bear Camp called the Alaska Department of Fish and Game on Tuesday and told them an unguided hunter from another camp had shot a brown bear sow with cubs.
The department says it authorized Munsey’s guides and hunters to rescue the cubs from the den. The cubs were flown to Anchorage on an Alaska Airlines flight Thursday.
Two of the cubs will go to a zoo in Wisconsin. The third may go to another zoo that is undergoing the permitting process.
Alaska Wildlife Troopers are investigating the incident because sows with cubs are not legal game.
