The campaign manager for Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Mr. Sanders’ line about former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s emails at Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate was unscripted and that Mr. Sanders’ supporters “went crazy” when they heard it.
“When we heard that line, the people who were watching with us, we went crazy,” campaign manager Jeff Weaver said Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day.” “We had never heard that line before. It was fantastic, right?”
“That was an unscripted, uncanned line — that was it,” Mr. Weaver said.
Mr. Sanders had told Mrs. Clinton at the debate: “The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails.”
Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman had said earlier on the program the line helped them. Mrs. Clinton has said setting up the private email server as secretary of state was a mistake, but the issue has continued to dog her on the campaign trail.
“He knew that he was not going to attack her on the emails, right?” Mr. Weaver said. “And we thought we would just let the question play out, and then suddenly Bernie, you know, injects himself into the conversation with this line. We thought it was fantastic.”
