JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A former Navy sailor has been sentenced to life in prison for the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

A Duval County judge sentenced 37-year-old Nicholas James Rivet on Thursday. He was convicted in June of second-degree murder.

Rivet had been assigned to Mayport Naval Station and had lived in an off-base military housing unit. Rivet told Brandi Robb her son was unresponsive in January 2010, and the couple took Eddie Robb to a Jacksonville hospital.

Prosecutors say the boy died after suffering massive head trauma, which resulted in blood on the brain and a blown pupil.

The Florida Times-Union (https://goo.gl/1kpqac ) reports that Robb and Rivet each had two children, and all four kids were in the home the night of the incident.
