A spokeswoman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign shot back at the “Make PC Great Again” hats Sen. Ted Cruz’s camp is now pushing online by saying Friday she figured Mr. Cruz was trying to boost his own support with a reference to “Princeton Canadians.”

“Well, I thought he was just trying to boost his support and donations,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said on Fox Business Network when asked about the hats. “To me, it was ‘Make Princeton Canadians great again.’ “

The red hat, now featured in the Cruz campaign’s online store, is a reference to Mr. Trump’s own “Make America Great Again” slogan and baseball caps.

It’s also a reference to comments Mr. Trump made Thursday after being asked about a North Carolina law that bars people from using public restrooms of the opposite sex. Asked about the law on NBC’s “Today” program, Mr. Trump said transgender people should be able to use whatever bathroom they want.

Mr. Cruz subsequently hammered Mr. Trump for the comments, saying at a Thursday rally in Frederick, Maryland, that he was waiting for “Make PC Great Again” baseball caps.

“A few months ago, Donald told us he could be the most politically correct person on earth — and I guess he’s showing us what that looks like,” Mr. Cruz said. “I am waiting with anticipation for the new baseball caps: ‘Make PC great again.’”

Ms. Pierson said there was no “PC” involved in Mr. Trump’s statements.

Mr. Trump actually supported the constitutional side of the argument,” she said. “So if Senator Cruz wants to capitalize and copy, once again, what Donald Trump is doing, let him have at it.”

Mr. Trump himself has frequently brought up the Canadian birthplace of Mr. Cruz, a Princeton University graduate.
