NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a drug treatment counsellor demanded cash from a client in exchange for favorable reports on the client’s progress.

Middlesex County prosecutors say Anthony Trimble is charged with theft by extortion.

The 54-year-old Howell Township man worked as a counsellor at a clinic in Perth Amboy. He allegedly demanded money from a client last week after that person failed a drug test.

The client - who is on probation - notified his attorney, who then notified authorities.

Trimble faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He was released on his own recognizance.

A telephone number for Trimble could not be located on Tuesday. It wasn’t known if he has retained an attorney.
