FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A Cumberland County deputy has been placed on administrative leave while authorities review what led to the escape of a jail inmate from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
The Fayetteville Observer reports (https://bit.ly/2hOmZNd) 39-year-old inmate Edward Moore was being watched by the deputy Wednesday at the hospital. Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office lawyer Ronnie Mitchell says the deputy loosened Moore’s restraints so he could use the restroom, and Moore punched the deputy, stole his stun gun and fled.
Moore was captured on Saturday.
Mitchell wouldn’t identify the deputy, but court documents identify him as J. Lacasse.
Mitchell says the review will include looking at the events as they happened, determining what departmental policies may have been violated and what the deputy may or may not have done.
Moore faces several charges, and is represented by public defender Bernard Condlin.
